About this position
The University of Innsbruck in Austria is recruiting a full-time PhD researcher for DC6 of the MSCA IGNIDTE project. The doctoral research focuses on inverse problems, mathematical modelling, machine learning, optimization, and the development, implementation, and evaluation of algorithms, with an interdisciplinary connection to clinical radiology.
Applicants should hold a Master's degree or equivalent and have a strong mathematical background together with Python coding skills. Suitable profiles may come from mathematics, physics, engineering, or computer science, provided they demonstrate substantial mathematical training. Direct prior experience in inverse problems or machine learning is not required, but purely application-oriented profiles without documented mathematical preparation are less suitable.
The successful candidate will receive a three-year, full-time doctoral employment contract at 40 hours per week, with a starting salary of €3,776.10 gross per month plus allowances. The position includes enrolment in the Mathematics doctoral programme at the University of Innsbruck, structured training across partner universities, two secondments at international academic and non-academic institutions, and participation in an interdisciplinary mathematics and clinical-radiology environment.
Formal eligibility includes having the Master's final certificate available before employment begins, not already holding a doctoral degree, and satisfying the MSCA mobility rule: no more than 12 months of residence, work, or study in Austria during the 36 months before 10 December 2026.
Apply online by 10 December 2026, select DC6 as the preferred doctoral project, and submit a two-page research proposal. Interviews for shortlisted candidates are scheduled for 18–31 January 2027.

What's required
Applicants must hold a Master's degree or equivalent, with the final certificate available before employment begins, and must not already hold a doctoral degree. Candidates should have a strong mathematical background and coding skills in Python. Ideal backgrounds include mathematics with Python experience; physics or engineering with documented mathematical training through a Master's thesis or elective subjects; or computer science with a strong mathematical focus. Purely application-oriented profiles without solid, documented mathematical training are not an ideal fit. Applicants must also satisfy the MSCA mobility rule: they must not have lived, worked, or studied in Austria for more than 12 months during the 36 months before 10 December 2026. A two-page research proposal for the selected DC6 project is required.
How to apply
Apply online at https://ignidte.i-med.ac.at/apply/. Select DC6 as the preferred doctoral project and include a two-page research proposal. Shortlisted candidates will be interviewed online from 18–31 January 2027.
