About this position

Full-time PhD opportunity in Mathematics at the University of Innsbruck, Austria. The MSCA project IGNIDTE DC5 seeks a doctoral researcher interested in the mathematics of diffusion models, inverse problems, generative models and machine learning.

The research is suited to applicants with a Master's degree in mathematics, or in physics or computer science with a strong mathematical focus. Candidates should have solid training in analysis, linear algebra, probability theory or stochastics, programming skills in Python, and a genuine interest in mathematically grounded machine learning. Purely application-oriented profiles without documented mathematical preparation are not a good fit. Applicants must not already hold a doctoral degree and must satisfy the MSCA mobility rule for Austria.

The successful candidate will receive a three-year, full-time doctoral employment contract at 40 hours per week, with a starting gross salary of €3,776.10 per month plus allowances. The position includes enrolment in the University of Innsbruck doctoral programme in Mathematics, structured training, winter schools, transferable-skills courses and two secondments at international academic and non-academic partner institutions. The project offers an interdisciplinary setting connecting mathematics with clinical radiology.

Apply online by 10 December 2026. Select DC5 as your preferred doctoral project and include a two-page research proposal. Shortlisted applicants will attend online interviews between 18 and 31 January 2027, with decisions expected by the end of February 2027. Informal project enquiries can be sent to Markus Haltmeier at [email protected]; programme questions can be sent to [email protected].
