About this position
Mahdi Vaezi at Northern Illinois University is recruiting a fully funded Graduate Research Assistant for the NIU Bioplastics Lab, starting in Spring 2027. The selected student will enroll in the M.S. in Industrial Management and Engineering Technology in NIU’s Department of Engineering Technology while conducting research in a lab focused on bioplastics, biocomposites, polymers, and sustainable materials.
This opportunity is especially relevant for applicants with backgrounds in materials engineering, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, engineering technology, or related fields. Strong preparation in polymer processing and manufacturing methods such as extrusion, compounding, compression molding, and injection molding is preferred, along with experience operating laboratory equipment, running experiments, analyzing data, and writing technical reports. The post also highlights the importance of literature review skills, scientific reading, and understanding of materials science and polymer property relationships.
This is a paid assistantship with a competitive stipend and a tuition waiver. The start date is fixed for Spring 2027, and deferred entry is not available. Only applicants currently residing in the United States who can satisfy NIU admission requirements and begin in Spring 2027 will be considered.
