About this position

Fully funded PhD project in AI protein design, structural biology, plant immunity, bioinformatics, biophysics, biochemistry, molecular biology, and plant biology at the University of Cambridge / Bentham Lab network, with co-supervision from Marc Knight. The project aims to design synthetic plant immune receptors from first principles, using generative AI tools such as RFdiffusion, ProteinMPNN and BindCraft, together with structural bioinformatics, X-ray crystallography, cryo-EM, and in planta functional testing.

You will work on two linked themes: mapping pathogen effector fold space to identify structurally conserved surfaces, and designing de novo receptor modules that bind those surfaces. The project combines computational protein design with experimental structural biology and plant immune signalling assays, including calcium reporters and quantitative gene expression analysis.

Applicants from computational, physical, and biological backgrounds are welcome. Strong foundations in one relevant area are expected, along with enthusiasm to learn across the others. Training includes generative protein design, structure prediction, recombinant expression and purification, structural characterisation, and plant transient expression.

This is a fully funded four-year Gatsby Sainsbury PhD studentship. Funding includes a maintenance stipend of £26,212 per year for 2027/28, plus £5,500 for lab expenses and £700 for books, conferences and travel. Tuition fees and Durham college fees are covered separately. There is also support for a six-month placement at another university or institute in year 3 or 4.

Deadline: 27 November 2026. How to apply: email Adam Bentham with a CV, one-page covering letter, and transcript. The supervisor will nominate one candidate to the Gatsby panel, and the selected candidate will then prepare a short research proposal before interview.
