Queen’s University Belfast is offering a fully funded PhD investigating how microbes interact and how antibiotic resistance evolves. The project examines the evolution of the commensal microbiome under repeated exposure to pathogens, with particular attention to how antibiotic resistance influences these outcomes. The research will be based in the School of Biological Sciences at Queen’s University Belfast. The project is led by Rachel Wheatley, a UKRI Future Leaders Fellow and Group Leader, wit...

About this position

Why Bacteria Survive Antibiotics: Understanding and Overcoming Antimicrobial Tolerance is a fully funded PhD project at the School of Pharmacy, Queen's University Belfast, led by Illuminate Fellow Thomas Thompson.

The research focuses on a central antimicrobial research question: why bacteria can survive antibiotic treatment even when laboratory tests indicate that they should be susceptible. The project will examine how infection environments alter bacterial physiology and contribute to antimicrobial tolerance.

The doctoral researcher will investigate bacterial survival during treatment and explore potential ways to improve the effectiveness of existing antibiotics. The work will combine experimental microbiology with infection-relevant models and omics approaches, creating an interdisciplinary research programme spanning microbiology, infection biology, antimicrobial resistance and antibiotic pharmacology.

The student will join a research environment within the School of Pharmacy and contribute to research aimed at understanding treatment failure and identifying strategies to overcome bacterial tolerance.
