About this position

Fully Funded PhD Studentship in Automotive Aeroacoustics, CFD and AI at the University of Bristol, in collaboration with Jaguar Land Rover through the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Sustainable Sound Futures.

The project, Quiet Efficiency: Reducing Wind Noise for Low Drag Cars (Br.27.3), investigates how advanced computational fluid dynamics and artificial intelligence can support the design of quieter, more aerodynamically efficient vehicles. Research will combine large-eddy simulation, machine learning, aeroacoustics and experimental validation.

Research activities include high-fidelity CFD of turbulent airflow around vehicle geometries, analysis of wind-noise generation from underbodies and rear aerodynamic devices, proper orthogonal decomposition, spectral analysis, advanced data processing, wind-tunnel comparison and AI-assisted aerodynamic design optimisation. Candidates will gain experience in CFD, fluid mechanics, turbulence modelling, high-performance computing, scientific programming and aerodynamic design.

Applicants should hold or expect to obtain a UK 2:1 honours degree or equivalent, or a relevant master's degree, in aerospace, mechanical or automotive engineering, CFD, fluid mechanics, physics, applied mathematics or a related discipline. CFD, numerical modelling, Python, MATLAB or data-analysis experience is advantageous, while prior LBM, aeroacoustics or HPC experience is not required. Training will be provided.

The four-year studentship is fully funded, covering full tuition fees and providing a tax-free UKRI-rate stipend, research training support and access to specialist facilities. UK home-fee applicants are particularly encouraged; international funding is limited and competitive. The application deadline is 11 January 2027 at 10:00 GMT, with an Autumn 2027 start.

Applicants must complete both official CDT online forms and select project Br.27.3. Informal enquiries can be directed to Dr Mohammad Jadidi at [email protected] with a brief introduction and CV.

Funding details

Fully funded four-year PhD studentship with full tuition-fee coverage, a tax-free annual stipend at the UKRI rate, research training support, and access to specialist CDT training and research facilities. Most funded places are intended for UK home-fee applicants; international funding is limited and highly competitive.

What's required

Applicants should have or expect to obtain a UK 2:1 honours degree or equivalent, or a relevant master's degree, in aerospace, mechanical or automotive engineering, computational fluid dynamics, fluid mechanics, physics, applied mathematics or a related discipline. Experience in CFD, numerical modelling, Python, MATLAB or data analysis is advantageous. Previous experience in lattice Boltzmann methods, aeroacoustics or high-performance computing is not required because training will be provided. UK home-fee eligibility is particularly encouraged; international applicants may apply but funded places are extremely limited and highly competitive.

How to apply

Review the project description and CDT application guidance, create an applicant ID, and submit both the Personal Details Application Form and PhD Project Application Form. Select project Br.27.3 and use the same applicant ID on both forms. Informal enquiries may be sent to Dr Mohammad Jadidi with a brief introduction and CV, but formal applications must use the CDT forms.
