About this position
Fully Funded PhD opportunity at University College London (UCL) in Bioinspired Robotics and Embodied Intelligence, starting 1 October 2027.
This interdisciplinary project focuses on designing robotic legs that are both strong and agile by learning from nature. The work combines robotic design, modelling, prototyping, and experimental testing to explore how biological principles can inform the next generation of robotic systems.
Research areas: bioinspired robotics, robotics, mechanical engineering, mechatronics, embodied intelligence, biomechanics, and related experimental engineering topics. The project is based in UCL Mechanical Engineering and the UCL Robotics Institute, in collaboration with the Royal Veterinary College (RVC).
Funding: This is a 4-year fully funded PhD studentship. It includes a stipend of £1,500/year above the London-weighted UKRI rate and covers home tuition fees.
Eligibility: The studentship is open only to applicants who qualify for UK Home tuition fee status under UCL rules. International/overseas fee payers are not eligible, even if they can personally cover the tuition fee difference.
How to apply: Email [email protected] with a CV (maximum 2 pages), contact details of two referees, and short written responses to two questions: (1) motivation for doctoral research and this project, and (2) suitability for doctoral research, including examples of independence, curiosity, time management, problem-solving, communication, and interdisciplinary skills.
Intended applicants: final-year MEng students, MSc students, and recent graduates interested in robotics, mechanical engineering, and bioinspired design.
