About this position
Atlantic Technological University (ATU Galway) is advertising a fully funded PhD opportunity in computational modelling for bio-based innovations in sustainable construction. The project is part of the BIOFABRICATE programme: Integrated Bio-based Innovations for Sustainable Manufacturing, Construction, and Pharmaceutical Applications from Irish Forest Biomass.
The PhD will focus on developing and validating finite element and other numerical models for timber structures, bio-based adhesives, and coatings. The work is strongly linked to experimental programmes across the consortium and aims to improve the design and optimisation of next-generation engineered wood products for the built environment. Research themes include material behaviour, moisture interactions, connection performance, and structural response under realistic service conditions.
The successful candidate will work with Dr Conan O’Ceallaigh at ATU Galway within a highly collaborative, multidisciplinary environment. The wider project is multi-institutional and involves the University of Galway, Technological University Dublin, Trinity College Dublin, Dublin City University, Teagasc, and industry partners.
Funding: €25,000 per annum stipend (tax exempt). Postgraduate fees for EU and non-EU students are covered, and travel/material costs are also funded.
Eligibility highlights: First or 2.1 Honours degree in civil engineering, structural engineering, mechanical engineering, computational mechanics, or a related discipline; strong English skills; experience with finite element analysis, numerical modelling, programming, and structural analysis is desirable. The post also notes that applicants must have valid EU work/residence/travel authorisation for the project duration, and English language evidence may be required for registration.
Deadline: 22 May 2026, 12 noon.
How to apply: Submit a CV with two referees, transcript, and one-page personal statement by email to [email protected]. Use the subject line Application to DAFM PhD and send all documents as a single Word or PDF file.
This is a strong opportunity for students interested in civil engineering, mechanical engineering, materials science, computational modelling, and sustainable construction.

What's required
Applicants must have valid authorisation to reside, work and travel freely in the European Union for the project duration. A First or 2.1 Honours degree in civil engineering, structural engineering, mechanical engineering, computational mechanics, or a related discipline is required. English fluency and excellent written, report-writing, and oral presentation skills are required. Desirable experience includes finite element analysis software (e.g. Abaqus, ANSYS), numerical modelling, programming, structural analysis, knowledge of structural mechanics or timber engineering, and strong analytical/problem-solving skills. A full clean Irish/European Union driving licence is required for some projects, and applicants whose first language is not English or Irish must provide evidence of English language proficiency for registration.
