About this position

The University of Oulu in Finland is offering a fully funded PhD position in Computer Science and Engineering, focusing on Embodied AI and neural signal processing. The position is part of the InfoTech research project “ThinkControl: Non-Invasive Brain Signal Decoding for Neural 3D Human Motion Reconstruction and Transfer Using Latent Diffusion Models” (2026–2029). The research aims to develop next-generation brain–machine interfaces by decoding EEG signals for fine-grained control of 3D human motion, leveraging advanced machine learning methods such as latent diffusion models, ControlNets, and neural representation learning.

The successful candidate will join the Center for Machine Vision and Signal Analysis (CMVS) at the Faculty of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering, working in a creative and internationally recognized research environment. The project involves processing multi-modality data (EEG, EMG, fMRI), building high-quality neural–behavior datasets, and improving decoding accuracy through cross-modal knowledge distillation. Collaboration with experts in neuroscience and clinical studies, including VR-based stroke rehabilitation, is part of the research environment.

Supervision will be provided by Assistant Professor Haoyu Chen, an expert in AI and computer vision, and postdoc researcher Delfin Tursin, who specializes in biosignal processing and motor imagery. The position offers access to extensive computing resources, travel grants for conferences and research visits, and opportunities to collaborate with leading research groups worldwide. The University of Oulu provides a supportive, international community with wellness benefits and programs to help new researchers settle in Finland.

Applicants must hold a Master’s degree in computer science or a related field (awarded within the past five years), demonstrate strong motivation for research, and possess excellent English communication skills. Experience with AI/deep learning is valued. The position is fixed-term for 3 years, with a starting gross salary of €2,600–€2,800 per month. Applications must be submitted in English by December 25, 2025, including a motivation letter, CV, list of publications, research proposal, references, and degree certificate. For more information, contact Assistant Professor Haoyu Chen at [email protected].
