About this position
The University of Nottingham is offering a fully funded, four-year, full-time PhD studentship beginning in December 2026: Dynamic Performance and AI-Driven Optimisation of Hybrid Energy Systems for Net Zero.
The project will develop and evaluate a hybrid energy system combining gas turbines, low-temperature carbon capture, biomass gasification and advanced solar thermal technologies. The aim is to enable carbon-negative fuel production, improve grid stability and support the United Kingdom’s net-zero ambitions.
Research activities will include thermodynamic modelling, transient simulation using UK climate and grid-demand profiles, system-performance evaluation, techno-economic assessment, life cycle analysis, AI-driven optimisation and intelligent control. Potential industrial applications include the steel, cement and waste-to-energy sectors.
The supervisory team comprises Dr Ioanna Dimitriou and Dr Oliver Fisher at the University of Nottingham. The project is part of the Net2Zero Centre for Doctoral Training, a partnership involving Aston University, the University of Nottingham, Queen’s University Belfast and the University of Warwick. Students receive access to research facilities, academic and industrial collaborations, professional training and a three-month industrial, research or policy placement.
Applicants should hold or expect to obtain a First-Class or strong 2:1 degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Energy Engineering, Process Engineering or a closely related subject. Experience with thermodynamics, energy systems, process modelling, programming or tools such as MATLAB, Python, Aspen Plus, TRNSYS or EES is desirable. Applicants must have Home Fee Status.
The funding package includes a UKRI tax-free stipend of £21,805 per year for 2026/27, full tuition fee support and a Research Training Support Grant. The position is open until filled. Academic enquiries can be directed to [email protected] or [email protected]; administrative enquiries can be sent to [email protected].
