About this position
This fully funded PhD project investigates how human impacts affect the growth of juvenile fishes during their first summer in dynamic, wave-swept sandy beach environments.
The research will combine laboratory trials at Brixham Laboratory with extensive field sampling on beaches in Devon and Cornwall. The project will bring together biochemical, physiological and geochemical techniques to examine how warmer temperatures and high levels of beach visitation influence fish growth and the functioning of important nursery habitats.
The work is associated with the Fish Habitat Research Unit, which studies the functioning of key nursery habitats for exploited species. The supervisory team comprises Keiron Fraser and Mark Rawling at the University of Plymouth and Clive Trueman at the University of Southampton, providing a collaborative research environment across marine biology, fish ecology and environmental science.
The project involves field-based coastal research alongside controlled laboratory experimentation and interdisciplinary analysis of juvenile fish responses to environmental conditions.
