About this position

PhD opportunity at the University of Leeds on climate uncertainty, compound events, and water-system impacts in Eastern England.

This project sits within the UNRISK CDT and focuses on how compound climate events and High Impact Low Likelihood (HILL) events interact with natural and human water systems. The research combines climate science, hydrology, environmental engineering, data analysis, data science, mathematical modelling, and decision making under uncertainty to improve climate risk assessment and adaptation planning.

Supervision is by Dr Ajay Bhave and Professor Suraje Dessai at the University of Leeds, with collaboration from Dr Geoff Darch (Anglian Water) and Prof Patrick Reed (Cornell University). The project aims to develop narratives/storylines and systems-modelling approaches to explore plausible future compound events, assess risks to the water sector, and evaluate adaptation strategies.

Funding: fully funded NERC studentship. Covers full tuition fees, a stipend at standard UKRI rates, £6000 for individual research and training, £5000 cohort training support, and access to a Flexible Fund. International applicants are welcome, but must cover visa and IHS costs and are subject to UKRI limits.

Eligibility: applicants should have a background in water resources and/or applied climate science, plus a strong interest in interdisciplinary research and learning new skills.

Application: applications are open to UK and international applicants. Check the UNRISK website for the full application process and project details.
