About this position

Wageningen University & Research in Wageningen, Netherlands, is offering a fully funded PhD position in insect virology within the NWO Vici project “Invisible influencers: How hidden virus infections shape insect life.” The project investigates how resident insect viromes affect immunity, fitness, life-history traits and responses to incoming virus infections.

The PhD researcher will define viromes in several lepidopteran species, study vertical virus transmission and transgenerational immune priming, and examine mechanisms of insect-virus interactions. Methods include virome sequencing, experimental infections, genomics, transcriptomics, small RNA sequencing, proteomics, hybridization techniques, confocal microscopy and gene editing. The researcher will work in the Insect Virology group within the Laboratory of Virology and collaborate with the Laboratory of Entomology, another PhD researcher, a postdoc and international colleagues.

Applicants should have an MSc in biology or a related discipline, a strong background in entomology and insect pathology, excellent molecular biology skills, basic bioinformatics knowledge and experience designing and conducting insect experiments. Strong analytical, conceptual, communication and scientific-writing skills are required, along with collaborative working ability and English proficiency at approximately CEFR C1 level.

The position is fully funded, with a gross salary of €3,204 per month in year one increasing to €4,051 in year four, based on a 38-hour week. The initial 18-month contract may be extended for the project duration. Applications must include a maximum two-page CV and one-page motivation letter, with a total limit of three pages.
