About this position
Fully Funded PhD opportunity in Isotope Geoscience at the University of Geneva, Department of Earth Sciences, Switzerland.
This PhD project focuses on isotope geoscience, thermochronology, and geochemistry/geophysics, with an emphasis on the 40Ar/39Ar method. The research will combine single- and multiple-grain isotopic analyses, in-situ isotopic measurements, and mineral characterization (texture, composition, structure) to investigate mechanisms of Ar redistribution within crystals and test assumptions used in thermochronology.
The project includes a significant field component in the USA and the French Alps, using well-known geological settings to evaluate whether isotopes are lost by thermal diffusion or by other processes such as sub-solidus mineral transformations.
Funding is provided for 4 years by the Swiss National Science Foundation. The opportunity is open to students worldwide.
Eligibility highlights: applicants should hold a BSc (hons; 1st class or 2-1), MSc, or equivalent degree in Earth Sciences, Physics, or Materials Science. Strong mathematics and natural sciences skills are beneficial, and candidates should be comfortable working in a clean laboratory with sophisticated equipment. Clear English communication is required.
Applications are accepted all year round and will be reviewed until a suitable candidate is found. To apply, send a cover letter, CV, and list of referees to Dr. Richard Spikings at [email protected].
