About this position
UCL is advertising a fully funded PhD studentship in medical robotics, human-robot interaction, soft robotics, and women’s health. The project focuses on how people interact with medical robots designed for use at home and in other non-traditional settings, using SoftCerv, a soft robot for speculum-free cervical screening and imaging.
Students will work on a combination of fieldwork with patient and community groups, robot user interface design, prototyping, and user evaluation. The post is especially relevant to applicants interested in technology for healthcare, inclusive design, and addressing health inequities through engineering.
The project is supervised by Aoife McDonald-Bowyer and Agostino Stilli, and is based at UCL Hawkes Institute in collaboration with UCL EGA Institute for Women’s Health. It is part of the UCL EPSRC Doctoral Landscape Award (UELA) and offers a 4-year fully funded studentship.
Applicants should have a background in human-robot interaction, design engineering, or robotics, with experience in qualitative research methods and/or user interface design. The call particularly encourages Home applicants, though the broader UELA recruitment also welcomes international candidates. The deadline is 8 January 2027, and the project is scheduled to start in October 2027.
Interested candidates should follow the application link for project details and submission instructions, and can contact the listed applicant email for enquiries.
