About this position

The University of Southampton is offering a fully funded PhD position in the Centre for Doctoral Training in Complex Integrated Systems for Defence & Security (CISDnS). As a PhD student, you will join an interdisciplinary team led by Dr Nela Nikolic (Microbiology), Professor Hywel Morgan (Bioelectronics), and Dr Franklin Nobrega (Phage Biology). The research will utilize a state-of-the-art on-chip platform that replicates the human urinary tract environment, enabling realistic infection modelling and rapid assessment of phage-based therapies. By integrating microbiology, bioengineering, and advanced imaging, the project seeks to uncover how phages interact with bacterial biofilms and host tissues, ultimately revealing new strategies to improve therapeutic effectiveness.

The work is highly relevant to global efforts to tackle antimicrobial resistance (AMR), a priority for public health and research funding. Eligibility is restricted to UK nationals with a minimum of a UK 2:1 honours degree or its international equivalent. The funding package includes an enhanced tax-free stipend of up to £31,000 per year, full tuition coverage, and a substantial budget for research, travel, and centre activities.
