The University of Southampton is offering a fully funded PhD position in the Centre for Doctoral Training in Complex Integrated Systems for Defence & Security (CISDnS). This opportunity is ideal for candidates passionate about impactful research at the intersection of microbiology, phage biology, and bioengineering. The project focuses on developing innovative solutions for urinary tract infection (UTI) treatment using advanced lab-on-a-chip technology, aiming to address the urgent challenge of antibiotic-resistant UTIs. As a PhD student, you will join an interdisciplinary team led by Dr Nela Nikolic (Microbiology), Professor Hywel Morgan (Bioelectronics), and Dr Franklin Nobrega (Phage Biology). The research will utilize a state-of-the-art on-chip platform that replicates the human urinary tract environment, enabling realistic infection modelling and rapid assessment of phage-based therapies. By integrating microbiology, bioengineering, and advanced imaging, the project seeks to uncover how phages interact with bacterial biofilms and host tissues, ultimately revealing new strategies to improve therapeutic effectiveness. The work is highly relevant to global efforts to tackle antimicrobial resistance (AMR), a priority for public health and research funding. You will benefit from access to cutting-edge microfluidics and imaging facilities, interdisciplinary training, and opportunities to collaborate with industry partners and clinical researchers working on AMR solutions. Eligibility is restricted to UK nationals with a minimum of a UK 2:1 honours degree or its international equivalent. The funding package includes an enhanced tax-free stipend of up to £31,000 per year, full tuition coverage, and a substantial budget for research, travel, and centre activities. The University of Southampton is committed to equality, diversity, and inclusivity, welcoming applicants from all backgrounds and offering flexible working patterns and generous support policies. To apply, candidates should submit an online application via the University of Southampton portal, selecting the relevant programme and supervisor, and providing a CV, two academic references, and degree transcripts. Informal enquiries are encouraged and can be directed to Dr Nela Nikolic. Key academic keywords: microbiology, phage biology, bioengineering, lab-on-a-chip, urinary tract infection, antimicrobial resistance, bacterial biofilms, advanced imaging, complex integrated systems.
