About this position

PhD opportunity at the Centre for Novel Agricultural Products (CNAP), Department of Biology, University of York, in collaboration with the Department of Plant Sciences, University of Cambridge.

This project sits at the intersection of plant biology, engineering biology, 3D imaging, single-cell genomics, spatial transcriptomics, and computational genomics. The research asks how cells from two evolutionarily distant plant species recognise each other, reprogramme their identities, and form a functional graft union. Using a rice–pearl millet grafting system, the PhD will build a 3D, cell-resolved atlas of graft union formation across the boundary between C3 and C4 plants.

The student will work with spatial and single-cell transcriptomics, 3D imaging and reconstruction, C3/C4 cereal grafting, and computational/genomic approaches, with strong relevance to plant developmental biology and vascular biology. The position is advertised by Pallavi Singh, UKRI Future Leaders Fellow at York, and is a collaboration with Julian Hibberd at Cambridge.

This is a fully funded 4-year Gatsby Sainsbury PhD studentship. The post does not list a deadline in the text provided, so applicants should check the application page promptly for the closing date and full eligibility details.
