About this position
A fully funded PhD opportunity is available at the University of Sheffield in the field of quantum photonics and 2D materials. The project focuses on developing ultracompact nonlinear devices based on layered van der Waals semiconductors, specifically 3R-stacked molybdenum disulfide (MoS₂), for the generation of quantum light. This research is at the forefront of quantum communication and photonic quantum computing, aiming to create high-efficiency single and entangled photon sources operating at room temperature. The successful candidate will join Professor Alexander Tartakovskii's group, which specializes in light-matter interactions in novel semiconductor structures and nanophotonic devices. The group is part of the LDSD (Light, Devices, and Semiconductor Dynamics) research cluster and collaborates closely with the Sheffield Quantum Centre. Training will include advanced computational design and simulation of nanophotonic structures, hands-on fabrication in state-of-the-art cleanrooms, and device characterization using cutting-edge optical spectroscopy. The project offers comprehensive development in quantum technologies, integrated photonics, and novel semiconductor materials, as well as transferable skills in research management, interdisciplinary collaboration, and science communication. The position is fully funded by the EPSRC, covering tuition and a stipend. Applicants should have a strong background in physics, materials science, or a related discipline, and an interest in quantum photonics or nanofabrication. The application deadline is December 28, 2024. For more information, candidates are encouraged to contact Professor Tartakovskii and review the group and project web pages.
