About this position
This PhD project at the University of Southampton explores reconfigurable photonic circuits for quantum computing, quantum information processing and secure communication networks. The research focuses on controlling how individual photons travel and interfere within compact, integrated quantum photonic chips.
The project will investigate dynamically reconfigurable devices whose optical properties can be programmed for quantum operations. A central approach is the use of electrostatically actuated mechanical metamaterial architectures to control nanoscale gaps between waveguides or between waveguides and nearby dielectric elements. Adjusting these gaps can modify evanescent coupling or the effective refractive index, enabling optical switching, phase tuning and programmable single-photon interference.
Research will address the independent control of multiple photonic components while limiting unwanted interactions and preserving quantum optical performance. The project also examines alternatives to thermo-optic phase shifters, with electrostatic tuning offering potential benefits in standby power consumption and thermal crosstalk for circuits that require occasional reconfiguration. Architected compliant mechanisms may support precise displacement control and mechanical isolation, while bistable structures could preserve selected switching states without continuous actuation.
The work sits at the intersection of quantum photonics, integrated device engineering, nanophotonics and mechanical metamaterials. Its broader goal is to establish compact, low-loss and energy-efficient chip concepts for future quantum computers, communication networks and integrated quantum technologies. Students will join Southampton's interdisciplinary quantum research environment.
