About this position
PhD position in Subseasonal Prediction of Atmospheric Rivers at Toulouse INP, France.
This 36-month doctoral project will develop a subseasonal forecasting framework for atmospheric rivers in Europe and South America. The research will address two high-impact, understudied regions at this forecast lead time and aims to improve probabilistic forecast reliability.
The project will investigate temporal aggregation to capture atmospheric-river variability, climate teleconnections and mid-latitude subseasonal circulation anomalies associated with enhanced predictability, and artificial intelligence for refining forecasts using large-scale climate signals. Research interests include atmospheric science, climate science, subseasonal-to-seasonal prediction, atmospheric rivers, probabilistic forecasting, machine learning, and artificial intelligence.
The position is fully funded for 36 months and starts in September 2027. Co-supervision is provided by Marisol Osman at IFAECi in Argentina, with 12 months of the PhD project taking place in Buenos Aires. Training, mobility, and career development activities are also included.
Applicants should have a Master's degree or equivalent by the start date, preferably in atmospheric or climate sciences, along with Python programming proficiency and advanced English. Spanish and/or French language skills are advantageous. The application deadline is 23 November 2026.
