About this position
Georgia Southern University is recruiting a doctoral student for an interdisciplinary, EPA-funded research project on sustainable wastewater treatment and nutrient recovery. The project focuses on recovering nitrogen and phosphorus from wastewater using 3D-printed alginate hydrogels integrated with natural deep eutectic solvents (NADES) and a synthetic microalgal-bacterial consortium.
The PhD researcher will contribute to hydrogel optimization through laboratory experiments, pilot-scale evaluation, and sustainability assessment. The work also incorporates AI design tools to support the development and evaluation of the treatment system, connecting environmental engineering, materials science, chemistry, biology, and resource recovery.
The student will join a research team involving Georgia Southern University, Auburn University, and the Bashan Institute of Science. The Georgia Southern team includes Francisco Cubas and Stetson Rowles from the Civil Engineering and Construction Department, Rocio Perez from the Chemistry Department, and Kamran Kardel from the Manufacturing Department. The interdisciplinary environment provides opportunities to work across water treatment, engineered materials, microbial systems, laboratory analysis, pilot-scale research, and sustainability.
This opportunity is suited to prospective doctoral researchers interested in sustainable water treatment, nutrient recovery, wastewater engineering, hydrogel-based technologies, microalgal-bacterial systems, and environmentally focused process development.
