About this position

Leiden University is offering a four-year PhD project in complex networks at the intersection of mathematics and computer science.

The research will investigate how mathematically tractable models can help explain important structural features of complex networks, including clustering, community structure, and degree heterogeneity. The project combines theoretical modelling with computational and data-driven investigations of real-world networks.

The PhD candidate will work across Leiden’s Mathematical Institute and the Leiden Institute of Advanced Computer Science and AI (LIACS), providing an interdisciplinary research environment that connects mathematical theory, network science, computer science, and empirical analysis. Supervision is provided by Assistant Professor Moritz Otto together with Akrati Saxena and Michel Mandjes.

Funding details

The position is a four-year, fully funded PhD project. No stipend amount or additional funding details are stated.

What's required

Applicants should have a Master’s degree in mathematics, computer science, or a related field, a background in network science or related topics such as graph theory, probability, random graphs, or complex systems, and programming experience. Students expecting to complete their Master’s by early spring 2027 are also welcome to apply.
