Heriot-Watt University is offering two fully funded PhD opportunities at the Lyell Centre in Edinburgh, focusing on the frontiers of environmental research. The first project, part of the IAPETUS2 Doctoral Training Partnership, investigates the organic matter reactivity continuum in UK coastal shelf seas. The second project, within the ECOWILD CDT, explores carbon-water dynamics in rewilding landscapes, specifically focusing on riparian zones. The research addresses how environmental stressors such as hydrological variability, nutrient enrichment, and metal interactions influence the reactivity and fate of organic matter in river systems. Students will gain hands-on experience in molecular characterisation, hydrological modelling, and ecosystem monitoring, with opportunities for interdisciplinary training and real-world policy engagement. Both projects are ideal for candidates with backgrounds in environmental science, chemistry, or geoscience who are passionate about tackling climate and ecosystem challenges.
