About this position

Multiple fully funded PhD positions are open at the Smart Grid Power Systems (SPS) Lab at the University of South Florida for Fall 2026 entry.

The openings are in power systems, smart grids, and related areas, including high-fidelity modeling, simulation, and stability analysis of power systems, electric machines, and power electronic converters; measurement-based data analytics; data-driven dynamic modeling of power grids and power plants; software tool development; control hardware prototyping; hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testing; and operational technology (OT) systems configuration for digital twin applications.

Applicants should have an M.S. degree in Electrical Engineering completed or expected before enrollment. Preferred preparation includes power systems, classic control theory, hardware design and implementation, programming and software development, strong analytical and problem-solving skills, and clear written and verbal communication.

The lab is led by Professor Lingling Fan at USF in Tampa, Florida. Interested candidates should apply through the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at USF and email [email protected] with a CV, transcript, and supporting evidence of research potential such as publications, project reports, software repositories, technical portfolios, or presentations.

This is a strong opportunity for students interested in power systems research, grid modeling, control, digital twins, and power electronics in a collaborative research environment.
