Funded PhD opportunity in viral DNA mimic proteins at the University of Bristol. Professor Mark Dillingham is seeking an enthusiastic PhD student to investigate how bacterial viruses (phages) produce proteins that masquerade as DNA and sabotage molecular machinery in bacterial hosts. The project will focus on discovering new DNA mimic proteins and understanding their mechanisms, including viral targeting of the bacterial DNA-processing enzyme RecBCD. Research will combine computational structura...

About this position

The University of Leicester is offering fully funded PhD projects through the BBSRC Midlands Integrative Biosciences Training Partnership (MIBTP), based in the Department of Molecular and Cell Biology and the Leicester Institute of Structural and Chemical Biology.

The projects are hosted in the AKV Lab, led by Dr. Abhinav KV. Two research projects focus on structural biology, antimicrobial resistance, horizontal gene transfer and virology. Students will combine cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM), biochemistry and molecular approaches to investigate biological structures and mechanisms relevant to microbial disease, resistance and viral systems.

The opportunity provides a research environment spanning structural biology, molecular biology, microbiology, biochemistry and advanced cryo-EM methods, with access to the interdisciplinary expertise of the department and institute.
