About this position
PhD studentship at the University of Surrey in Cardiovascular Science, focused on extracellular vesicles and disease mechanisms in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM).
The project sits within the Cardiovascular Research Group and uses human induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC)-derived cardiomyocytes and supporting cells to study how cell-to-cell communication contributes to cardiac remodelling, scarring, and electrical instability. Research methods include human cell culture, extracellular vesicle isolation and characterisation, advanced microscopy, cardiac functional assays, and molecular/proteomic analysis.
This is a fully funded PhD for UK/home fee-paying candidates. Funding covers Home-rate tuition fees, research/training expenses, and an annual tax-free stipend at UKRI rates (£21,805 for 2026-27).
Applicants should have, or be about to obtain, a first or upper second-class honours degree in a relevant area such as medical sciences, biomedical sciences, biomedical engineering, molecular biology, physiology, or biochemistry. An MSc/MRes in cardiovascular or molecular science and/or prior research experience in molecular biology or cell biology would be an advantage.
The supervisor is Dr Patrizia Camelliti. The advertised start date is April 2027, with later start dates possible. The application deadline is 31 October 2026.
To apply, email a CV, supporting statement, referee details, and degree certificates/transcripts directly to [email protected].
