About this position
The University of Nottingham is offering a fully funded, four-year, full-time PhD studentship through the Net2Zero Centre for Doctoral Training. The project, “Development and Demonstration of a Laboratory-Scale Next Generation Multifunctional Reactor for Biochar Production and Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS) Technology,” will contribute to innovative net-zero technologies.
The successful candidate will design, manufacture and test a laboratory-scale multifunctional reactor capable of producing biochar and bio-syngas while operating as a BECCS system. Research activities include evaluating biomass feedstocks and biochar-derived materials, conducting experimental CO₂ capture studies using calcium-based and other solid sorbents, and characterising materials with advanced facilities at the University of Nottingham. The work will involve collaboration with academic and industrial partners.
Applicants should have, or expect to obtain before enrolment, a First Class or strong Upper Second-Class (2:1) Honours degree and/or Master’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Chemistry or a closely related discipline. Experience with reactor design or fluidised-bed systems is desirable but not essential. The studentship is open to Home Fee Status candidates only.
Funding includes a UKRI tax-free stipend of £21,805 per annum for 2026/27, full tuition fee support and a Research Training Support Grant. The supervisory team comprises Prof. Hao Liu and Dr Yaoyao Zheng of the University of Nottingham, with industrial involvement from Nate Macmillan of AEL CCS. The closing date is 30 November 2026, with a December 2026 start.
Interested applicants should apply via the University of Nottingham vacancy portal, reference ENG415. Academic enquiries may be directed to [email protected] or [email protected].
