About this position

Graduate School Global and Area Studies (GSGAS) at Leipzig University offers a doctoral programme for excellent candidates working on globally oriented, inter- and post-disciplinary research questions.

The programme brings together a broad academic environment in collaboration with the Research Centre Global Dynamics (ReCentGlobe), the Leibniz Institute for Regional Geography (IfL), the Leibniz Institute for the History and Culture of Eastern Europe (GWZO), and the IMPRS Global Multiplicity: A Social Anthropology for the Now at the Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology.

Research is centred on how societies across the globe respond to deterritorialisation and reterritorialisation, with particular attention to the ways global flows, spatial frameworks, sovereignty, and social interaction shape historical and contemporary transformations.

Students can engage with themes such as global and transnational history, international and transregional studies, commodity chains, international organisations, migration systems, cultural transfers, globalization, and the power relations linked to territorial and social change.

The programme is taught mainly in English with some German, and it is designed as a full-time, fully on-site doctoral track with structured research and supervision, research training and discussion, and support services for international doctoral candidates.
