About this position

Leipzig University offers a doctoral programme in Global Studies with a special emphasis on Peace and Security in Africa, developed in cooperation with the Centre for Peace and Security Studies (CPSS), Addis Ababa University.

The programme focuses on how globalisation has shaped African peace and security, with particular attention to the continent’s vulnerabilities, conflicts, and wider development challenges. It situates these questions within Global Studies and Area Studies, using interdisciplinary perspectives from fields such as political science, sociology, political economy, cultural sciences, new political geography, and global history.

Students are trained as junior researchers and professionals in globalisation research, with an emphasis on analysing regional perspectives on globalisation processes and understanding the dynamics of peace and security in Africa. The programme also highlights the global integration of the continent and the role of Africa’s emerging peace and security architecture.

The research environment includes structured research and supervision, research training and discussion, and support for international doctoral candidates. The programme is designed to prepare graduates for research, teaching, and work in international organisations and in conflict management, prevention, resolution, and early warning.
