About this position
The Integrated Graduate School Solvation Science (iGSS) is a doctoral programme based in Bochum and embedded in the Cluster of Excellence RESOLV. It brings together Ruhr-Universität Bochum, TU Dortmund University, the University of Duisburg-Essen, and local partner institutes including the Max Planck Institutes for Chemical Energy Conversion, Coal Research, and Sustainable Materials.
Students join a large interdisciplinary research environment with more than 80 graduate students and over 200 scientists across six institutions in the Ruhr region. The scientific focus is on understanding how solvents actively control, mediate, and regulate chemical reactions and processes. This research spans experimental chemistry, theory, and chemical engineering, with links to applications such as green technologies and smart sensors.
The programme is designed to combine high-profile research with early scientific independence in an inclusive, international, and diversity-sensitive setting. Participants can follow structured doctoral training, complete research projects in affiliated PI and PS groups, and take part in lectures, colloquia, workshops, annual summer schools, and an international internship. The programme also offers two tracks: one for Master’s degree holders and one for Bachelor’s degree holders with preparatory study.
Doctoral degrees are awarded by the relevant department at Ruhr-Universität Bochum, TU Dortmund University, or the University of Duisburg-Essen depending on the project and affiliation.
