About this position
The International Max Planck Research School for Biology and Computation (IMPRS-BAC) is a doctoral programme jointly run by the Max Planck Institute for Molecular Genetics in Berlin and Freie Universität Berlin. It brings together research and training across the departments of Mathematics and Computer Science, Biology, Chemistry and Pharmacy at FUB, alongside the research environment of MPIMG.
The programme is designed around the growing interface between molecular genetics and information science. Doctoral candidates work in an environment that combines experimental molecular biology with data analysis, encouraging close integration of laboratory work and computational thinking. The research areas mentioned include gene regulation, development and cellular differentiation, chromatin biology and epigenetics, RNA biology, computational biology, and genome analysis.
IMPRS-BAC emphasises structured research and supervision, with courses, seminars, and joint research activities intended to build a close-knit doctoral community. The training aims to equip candidates to design experiments and analysis together, rather than separating data generation from downstream interpretation. The programme also highlights support for international doctoral candidates, social integration, and family-friendly conditions within the research school and institute.

What's required
Applicants should have a degree suitable for doctoral study; new doctoral candidates are expected to have their degree granted by October 2027 so they can attend the Welcome Week in November 2027, with exceptions possible. The programme is full-time and taught in English; some Bachelor's-level courses may be in German but these are not mandatory. Candidates should be prepared for interdisciplinary research spanning experimental molecular biology and data analysis, including possible specialisation in genomic and molecular biology techniques, algorithms, statistics, and artificial intelligence for molecular genetics.
How to apply
Check the programme website for application periods and further details. Use the application link to submit your materials via the IMPRS-BAC application page. Confirm that your degree will be granted by October 2027 if you plan to join the November 2027 Welcome Week.
