About this position
Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P), through the International Water Research Institute (IWRI), is recruiting a Postdoctoral Researcher for an interdisciplinary project in bioinspired circular conversion of multi-source biomass feedstocks for water-retentive agricultural systems.
The research program focuses on the development of bioinspired, circular-economy-driven materials designed to improve water retention, soil hydration, nutrient retention, and soil regeneration. The work is directly linked to water scarcity resilience and climate-smart agriculture, with an emphasis on supramolecular materials derived from renewable biomass resources, including marine and lignocellulosic feedstocks.
The successful candidate will conduct original research on bioinspired materials, biostimulant matrices, and water-retentive biobased systems that enhance water–nutrient coupling and support improved plant nutrition. Responsibilities include designing, synthesizing, and optimizing functional biomaterials, carrying out full physicochemical characterization, and evaluating performance in laboratory or greenhouse experiments related to water stress mitigation, soil hydration, plant germination, and agronomic outcomes.
Required expertise includes a PhD in Chemistry, Materials Science, or a closely related discipline, along with demonstrated experience in sustainable processing of biomass feedstocks and/or the development of biobased or bio-inspired materials. Strong knowledge of biopolymers, supramolecular assembly, hydrogels, colloidal systems, and eco-friendly soil conditioners is highly relevant. Practical skills in FTIR, UV–Vis, XRD, DLS, SEM–EDS, TEM, and TGA/DSC are expected, as well as experience with greenhouse or laboratory testing under water-stress conditions. A strong publication record, ability to prepare technical reports and high-impact manuscripts, and fluency in English are also required.
The role is embedded in a multidisciplinary and multicultural environment and includes collaboration with internal and external researchers across water sciences, materials chemistry, and sustainable agriculture. The postdoctoral researcher will also mentor and co-supervise Master’s and PhD students, contribute to research proposal development, and support innovation and technology transfer activities at IWRI.
How to apply: Candidates should submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae, research statement, list of publications, and two references via the application link. The posting does not specify a deadline.
