About this position

This PhD position at KU Leuven offers an exciting opportunity to work at the intersection of soft robotics and electrochemical materials, focusing on the development of advanced lab-on-chip systems for independent mechanical and electrical stimulation of cells. The research will be conducted in collaboration between the Soft Robotics research group, led by Prof. Benjamin Gorissen, and the Laboratory of Electrochemical MATerials and BioInterfaces (eMATI), led by Prof. Irene Taurino. The Soft Robotics group specializes in the design, optimization, and experimental validation of soft material systems capable of interacting with living systems, while eMATI advances nano- and microtechnologies for sensing, therapy, and stretchable/bioresorbable electrochemical devices.

The project aims to create a novel cell stimulation device that can independently deliver mechanical loading (stretch and compression), electrical stimulation, and other biophysical cues within a single platform. This device will be compatible with existing imaging and visualization techniques and is intended for use in translational biomedical research. The successful candidate will contribute to the theoretical design, simulation (mechanical and electrical), fabrication using cleanroom technologies, and validation of prototypes in collaboration with clinical partners.

Applicants should have a master's degree in mechanical or electrical engineering, physics, materials science, or equivalent, with at least distinction. A strong background in micromanufacturing, experience with finite element analysis, and proficiency in English are required. Candidates should demonstrate creativity, analytical skills, hands-on experimental aptitude, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team. Good communication skills and a willingness to write a PhD fellowship proposal for national funding are expected.
