Applicants are strongly encouraged to identify a potential supervisor and subject group before applying.

What's required
Applicants should normally hold a postgraduate master's degree from an accredited UK or overseas institution, with a relevant subject classification of at least 65% or equivalent and a dissertation worth one-third of the degree credits at distinction level or equivalent. Applicants with a master's without the required dissertation component need a distinction-level degree or equivalent. Applicants without a master's may be considered with a UK first-class undergraduate degree or international equivalent and at least 70% in the dissertation module. Applicants may apply while completing a degree, subject to meeting the required standard. A rigorous research proposal of 1,000–1,500 words, personal statement, relevant knowledge and training skills, degree certificates, grading scheme, transcripts, two references including at least one academic reference, and certified translations where applicable are required. Applicants must provide evidence of English proficiency, normally IELTS Academic 7.0 overall with at least 6.0 in each component, or an accepted equivalent. Applicants who meet the entry requirements will be interviewed by a panel, and selection depends on proposal quality, interview performance, and fit with the School's research expertise. Applicants are strongly advised to propose one to three potential supervisors and a subject group.
How to apply
Review the entry requirements and staff profiles, identify a suitable subject group and propose one to three potential supervisors. Prepare a 1,000–1,500-word research proposal and supporting documents, then apply online through the University of Edinburgh Applications Hub on Euclid. Apply separately for scholarships before their deadlines if seeking funding.
