About this position
Eawag, the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology, is offering a Master’s thesis project in freshwater ecology, evolutionary dynamics, biodiversity, and ecosystem functioning focused on subarctic lakes in Greenland.
The project is hosted by the Department of Fish Ecology and Evolution (FishEc) and contributes to a newly funded Swiss National Science Foundation project on eco-evolutionary community assembly in subarctic lake ecosystems. The research context is especially exciting: lakes in Southern Greenland differ in glacial influence, ecosystem development, and fish communities, ranging from fishless systems to lakes containing threespine stickleback, Arctic charr, or both.
Depending on the student’s interests, the thesis may focus on the evolution of stickleback and/or copepods, the community dynamics of littoral macroinvertebrates and/or zooplankton, or broader ecosystem dynamics such as productivity, nutrient cycling, oxygen dynamics, and water transparency. The work may involve processing biological samples and/or analyzing existing environmental datasets. The exact question and methods will be developed jointly with the supervisory team to fit the student’s interests.
The ideal applicant is a motivated master’s student enrolled at a university for the full thesis period. Strong interest in freshwater ecology, biodiversity, or ecosystem functioning is essential, together with good spoken and written English and the ability to work carefully and independently. Experience with R statistical analysis is an advantage, and interest in microscopy and taxonomic identification would be particularly valuable for community-focused work.
The practical work will be based at Eawag, Kastanienbaum (near Luzern), Switzerland. The post notes possibilities for subsidized accommodation in shared flats. The preferred starting date is in spring 2027, though timing is flexible. Applicants from outside Europe may also be considered if the necessary permits for study in Switzerland can be obtained.
Applications are accepted on a rolling basis until the position is filled. To apply, submit a short motivation letter (max. one page) describing your interests, preferred project direction, and timing, together with a CV, via the online application form linked in the announcement. For questions, contact Dr Blake Matthews at [email protected].
