About this position
Eawag, the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology, is offering a Master’s thesis project in chironomid biodiversity across Swiss lakes. The project is linked to the Swiss National Assessment of Lake Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (SNALBES), an initiative focused on building a stronger scientific basis for monitoring biodiversity in Swiss lakes and connecting research with conservation and management needs.
The student will work with chironomids collected during the planned 2027 SNALBES field campaign. The thesis will involve sorting and preparing specimens, identifying chironomids to a defined taxonomic level, and compiling a community dataset. Depending on the sampling design and environmental data available, the project may examine how chironomid assemblages differ among lakes or habitats and how they relate to environmental conditions. The final research question and sample selection will be developed together with the supervisory team.
This opportunity is especially relevant for students interested in freshwater ecology, taxonomic identification, biodiversity, and community-level analysis of aquatic invertebrates. The ideal candidate is motivated, careful, systematic, and comfortable with detailed microscopy work. Good spoken and written English are essential. Experience with aquatic invertebrates or R is welcome but not required.
The practical work will be based at Eawag, Kastanienbaum (near Luzern), Switzerland. The post mentions possibilities for subsidized accommodation in shared flats. Students from outside Europe may also be considered if they can obtain the necessary Swiss study permits. The preferred start is spring 2027, though the timing is flexible. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis until the position is filled.
To apply, submit a one-page motivation letter explaining your interests and preferred project duration/timing, together with a CV, via the application form on the webpage only. For questions, contact Dr Blake Matthews at [email protected].
