NSF BMMB Project | Southern Methodist University – Mechanical Engineering
We’re looking for a PhD student with an M.S. in Mechanical Engineering to join our NSF-funded project exploring the mechanics of bacterial flagella and their role in powering next-generation nanorobots for biomedical applications. FYI, https://lnkd.in/gG_qSC5J
?? About the Project
Bacteria swim using slender, spiral-shaped filaments called flagella. Their stiffness determines how efficiently they swim, turn, and navigate. This project will:
- Uncover how flagellar stiffness impacts swimming & turning behaviors
- Advance models of flagella-powered nanorobot propulsion
- Combine high-precision experiments, 3D image reconstruction, and computational hydrodynamics
?? You’ll Gain Experience In
- Biophysics, microfabrication, computational modeling, and microscopy
- Collaborating with experts in microbiology, nanorobotics, and soft robotics
- Developing tools and models for bio-inspired locomotion systems
?? Minimum Qualifications
- M.S. in Mechanical Engineering (or related field)
- Microfluidic fabrication (photolithography + soft lithography)
- MATLAB & Python proficiency
- Undergraduate GPA > 3.5/4.0
? Preferred Skills
- Fluid mechanics, biophysics, or soft robotics background
- Microscopy & image analysis experience
?? How to Apply
Send to [email protected] :
- CV/resume
- Academic transcripts
- Brief research statement
- Three references
