About this position

Moore Postdoctoral Fellowship in the Environmental Fluid Dynamics Lab at the University of California, San Diego invites a postdoctoral researcher to work on machine learning-based ocean state estimation. The project sits in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and is part of a collaboration with researchers at UC San Diego and Stanford University.

The fellowship is centered on developing data-driven tools for ocean state estimation with quantified uncertainty. The successful fellow will work on scientific machine learning and reduced-order modeling approaches that use large simulation datasets and heterogeneous observations to improve near-field prediction of physical and biological conditions relevant to marine operations. The application areas named in the advert include marine carbon dioxide removal and aquaculture.

The research environment is collaborative and interdisciplinary. The postdoc will work directly with Dr. Geno Pawlak Tejada in the Environmental Fluid Dynamics Lab, together with Boris Kramer and Oliver Schmidt, and will have opportunities to collaborate with co-investigators at partner institutions. The role also includes mentoring graduate and undergraduate students and presenting and publishing research results in academic venues.

The appointment is initially for two years, with the possibility of extension depending on performance and funding availability.

Funding details

Funded by the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation; salary estimate is $69,073 - $71,632, with salary commensurate with qualifications and experience and subject to the UCSD Postdoc Salary Scale.

What's required

Doctoral degree in engineering, oceanography, or a related field with relevant background in data-driven modeling, machine learning, and/or fluid mechanics. At start date, candidates should have experience in numerical fluid dynamics or ocean model application, validation, and analysis, be able to collaborate effectively in a team environment, and have excellent written and oral communication skills. Preferred qualifications include a publication record in peer-reviewed journals related to the minimum qualifications and the ability to pursue research independently.

How to apply

Apply through the UCSD Recruit portal using the provided application link. Upload a current CV, cover letter, statement of research, and a one-page summary of your doctoral dissertation. Provide 3-5 references with contact information; referee contact names should be provided by the deadline.
