About this position

The MSc in Acoustics and Music Technology at the University of Edinburgh is a one-year, full-time postgraduate programme based at Edinburgh College of Art and the Reid School of Music. It takes the science of sound as its focus and examines the musical, technical and multimedia applications of acoustics and audio technology.

Students work in a cross-disciplinary environment combining theoretical and experimental approaches. The programme develops scientific foundations in acoustics, audio and music technology while building research, programming and analytical problem-solving skills. Areas of study include acoustic modelling, room acoustics, audio signal processing, sound reproduction and creative music technology.

Teaching combines lectures, seminars, tutorials and practical work. Students receive training in MATLAB and may also work with Python and C++, depending on their selected courses. Coursework is assessed through reports and written examinations, followed by an individual final project completed during the last three months and presented through a dissertation and presentation.

The programme provides access to technical facilities including sound studios, VR and multichannel rooms, practice spaces, computer laboratories and specialist audio equipment. Optional modules may be taken across the University of Edinburgh, including offerings from Informatics, Mathematics, and Physics and Astronomy. Students join an established community of acoustics and music technology students and can pursue projects connecting theoretical acoustics with practical coding and audio applications.

Academic staff associated with the programme include Dr Thomas McKenzie, Dr Alec Wright, Dr Michael Newton and Dr Tom Mudd. Teaching is primarily located in the University’s Central Area, with core coursework based at Alison House and some tutorials held in central-campus computer laboratories. The programme supports progression into acoustics and audio engineering careers as well as further doctoral or research study.
