About this position
The MSc Analytical Chemistry at the University of Edinburgh is a one-year, full-time postgraduate programme based at the School of Chemistry’s King’s Buildings campus. It provides advanced theoretical and practical training in the separation, identification and quantification of matter using modern analytical chemistry techniques.
Students explore chromatography and separation science, optical spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance, mass spectrometry, electrochemistry and sensors, sampling and data analysis, biomolecular analysis, and materials characterisation. The programme allows specialisation in areas such as biomolecule analysis or materials characterisation.
Teaching is delivered by leading researchers through lectures, tutorials, workshops and small-group learning. The School of Chemistry provides access to world-class analytical chemistry facilities, enabling students to develop hands-on experience with a broad range of analytical instruments and modern laboratory methods.
The programme combines taught courses with practical laboratory and research techniques training. In the second semester, students undertake an MSc research project and dissertation, applying analytical methods to a focused research problem while developing skills in data interpretation, scientific communication, teamwork, research design and technical reporting.
Students join an internationally diverse research community of more than 50 academic staff and benefit from tutorial support, cohort activities and academic guidance. The programme is accredited by the Royal Society of Chemistry and fulfils the academic requirements for Chartered Chemist status. Graduates may progress to PhD study or careers in chemical, pharmaceutical, cosmetic, food, environmental, healthcare, diagnostic and other science-related sectors.
