About this position

This PhD project at the University of Southampton, within the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Quantum Technology Engineering, focuses on developing a novel nano-opto-electro-mechanical (NOEM) tunable silicon carbide (SiC) entangled photon source for future on-chip quantum photonic circuits. The research aims to establish a robust technological platform for generating entangled photon pairs in a controlled manner, advancing quantum information and communication technology. The project involves design optimisation, device fabrication, and single photon measurements to demonstrate the working principle and tunability of the device. Opto-electro-mechanical interactions will be used to control the timing of single photon emissions and regulate the level of entanglement from two adjacent photon sources.

SiC is chosen as the platform material for its suitability in integrated, reconfigurable quantum circuits. The outcome will be a novel tunable entangled photon generator demonstrated on a silicon-based substrate, contributing to discrete photon generation device research and paving the way for on-chip photon-source-integrated quantum circuit technologies. The project is a collaboration between the University of Southampton and the Institute of Science Tokyo. Students will receive substantial training in scientific, technical, and commercial skills.

UK students are eligible for a 4-year UKRI TechExpert tax-free stipend of around £31k per year, with studentships at the UKRI base rate available for EU, Horizon Europe, and International students. Overseas students with external funding are also encouraged to apply. Entry requirements include an undergraduate degree with at least a UK 2:1 honours or international equivalent.
