Description

Cornell University’s Department of Natural Resources and the Environment is seeking a Postdoctoral Associate to join a research project focused on forecasting changes in avian biodiversity under changing climate conditions. The position is based in Ithaca, NY, within the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS), a leader in interdisciplinary, purpose-driven science. The successful candidate will work on a large-scale, multi-sectoral project that uses data from eBird and structured monitoring programs to identify priority areas for migratory forest birds through the end of the century. The research involves forecasting species’ responses to projected climate and land-use/land-cover change under multiple socio-climatic scenarios, providing management agencies with robust, high-resolution information to inform long-term conservation planning and decision-making. Key objectives include modeling species distributions and relative abundances through 2100, identifying priority areas for future avian biodiversity, and quantifying the combined impacts of climate and land-use/land-cover change on population persistence using structured survey data. The postdoctoral associate will collaborate closely with scientists in the Conservation Science and eBird Status and Trends teams at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, as well as external partners. The anticipated division of time includes developing methods and analyses (45%), presenting results and preparing research products (35%), participating in professional development (10%), engaging in academic life at Cornell and with partners (5%), and project management (5%). The appointment is for one year, renewable up to three years based on performance and funding. Applicants must have a PhD in quantitative ecology, applied statistics, or a related field, with strong skills in statistics and model development, experience with R and other statistical languages, and a record of research success. Experience with wildlife survey data, participatory science data, and climate data is preferred but not required; ornithology experience is a bonus. The position offers a competitive salary range of $62,232 to $70,175 per year. Applications are accepted via Academic Jobs Online and reviewed on a rolling basis until the position is filled. Cornell University is an equal opportunity employer and values diversity in its workforce.
