About this position
USAMRICD Neuroscience Research Opportunity at the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Chemical Defense, located at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland, offers two postgraduate/postdoctoral fellowship placements within a defense-focused research environment.
The project is embedded in the institute’s mission as the Department of Defense’s lead laboratory for medical chemical defense research. Fellows will work in either Dr. Lucille Lumley’s neuroscience laboratory or Dr. Michael Adler’s laboratory, contributing to research on medical countermeasures against chemical threat agents and toxins.
In Dr. Lumley’s lab, the work centers on in vivo pharmacology and toxicology studies related to chemical-induced seizure, epileptogenesis, neuroinflammation, and neurodegeneration. The research includes evaluating therapeutics aimed at reducing the effects of cholinergic-induced seizures, and uses telemetry-based EEG monitoring, microscopy, and behavioral testing to study motor, sensorimotor, emotional, and cognitive outcomes.
In Dr. Adler’s lab, the fellowship focuses on tiered studies that combine cell culture, ex vivo, and in vivo approaches to assess toxin toxicity, especially neurotoxins, and to evaluate therapeutics that may reduce those toxic effects. Methods include electrophysiological techniques in cultured neuron-like cells and tension recordings in isolated nerve-muscle preparations.
The appointment offers hands-on experience across a broad set of neuroscience and translational methods, including small animal surgery, immunohistochemistry, brain microscopy, behavioral assays, telemetric physiological assessment, manuscript preparation, conference presentations, and grant-writing experience. The institute’s scientific environment spans chemistry, biology, biochemistry, pharmacology, molecular biology, neuroscience, toxicology, physiology, psychology, and immunology, supporting interdisciplinary work on protection from chemical threats.
The position is hosted at the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Chemical Defense in Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland.
