About this position
Open PhD position at the University of Stuttgart within the industry-sponsored Graduate School Intelligent Methods for Test and Reliability (GS-IMTR), in collaboration with Advantest, a leader in automatic test equipment.
The position is hosted at the Institute of Smart Sensors and is part of Project P14: Intelligent Sensing and On-Chip Learning for Silicon Lifecycle. The research focuses on silicon lifecycle management and its impact on chip design and testing, with particular emphasis on digital on-chip sensors, edge AI in the tester, and on-chip online learning for efficient run-time data collection and processing. The project also includes developing a test program for a state-of-the-art data converter and processing statistically relevant test data.
Research topics in the wider GS-IMTR program include design for test and diagnosis, post-silicon validation, test generation and optimization, robust device tuning, system-level test, lifetime test and reliability management, and test automation. The position offers strong industrial interaction with Advantest, access to state-of-the-art IC design tools, a fully equipped mixed-signal lab, cleanroom manufacturing access via IMS CHIPS in Stuttgart, and a stimulating environment with more than 20 PhD students working on smart sensing, biomedical and materials science applications, and quantum technologies.
Eligibility highlights: applicants should hold a Master’s degree or equivalent in electrical engineering, computer science, physics, or a related field. A strong background in machine learning, FPGA programming, and analog/mixed-signal integrated circuit design is expected, along with a solid microelectronics foundation. Very good English skills are required.
Funding: the post is a TVL-E13 100% PhD position with a competitive annual gross salary of more than 45,000 EUR depending on experience.
Deadline: 2027-09-30.
