About this position

HKUST’s Machine Vision & Smart Infrastructure Lab (MVSI) in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering is recruiting motivated MPhil and PhD students for Spring and Fall 2027. The lab is led by Assistant Professor Xiao Pan at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.

The research group works at the intersection of civil engineering, computer science, robotics, AI, computer vision, point clouds, sensor fusion, and multimodal reasoning. Current themes include structural damage detection, UAV/UGV-based inspection, construction automation, automated engineering drawing parsing, digital twins, and smart infrastructure for buildings, bridges, roads, and tunnels.

Selected candidates will be fully funded for 4 years. The post also notes that exceptional candidates may be nominated for the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme (HKPFS), which provides a higher stipend and travel allowance, and HKUST HKPFS awardees receive a tuition fee waiver.
