Dr. Ben Ma’s research group in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) is recruiting for graduate and postdoctoral opportunities in water-related environmental research.

PhD opening: One PhD research assistant position is available starting Fall 2026 (with the post noting a possible Spring 2027 start as well). The project focuses on organic carbon characterization and biofouling prediction in water systems, including treatment facilities, distribution systems, and storage systems. The group works across lab-scale and field-scale investigations and collaborates with industrial partners and researchers across UNR and other universities.

Postdoc opening: One postdoctoral position is available immediately. The postdoc will work on the molecular-level mechanisms of pathogen disinfection using UV and chemical disinfectants, with additional opportunities to contribute to projects on biofilm control in water systems and UV disinfection in indoor environments.

Eligibility highlights: For the PhD, applicants should have a master’s degree preferred or a bachelor’s degree in environmental engineering, chemical engineering, bioengineering, microbiology, or a related field, plus lab experience in microbiology, chemistry, molecular biology, and bioinformatics. Strong data analysis skills using R, MATLAB, or other statistical software are expected, along with good writing, communication, and teamwork skills. For the postdoc, applicants should hold a PhD in environmental engineering, microbiology, or a related field, have a strong publication record, and demonstrate problem-solving, troubleshooting, and data analysis skills.

Funding and benefits: The PhD role is a research assistant position. The postdoc appointment is for one year with possible renewal; salary and title depend on experience, and benefits include a 19.25% employer-matched retirement contribution.
