About this position

Open PhD and postdoctoral research positions are available in the SEGAL research group at the University of Victoria with Prof. Daniela Damian. The project is titled Human-Centered Hybrid Intelligence for Software Engineering and focuses on human-AI collaboration, responsible AI, and the design and evaluation of AI-assisted software development that aligns with human values, agency, inclusivity, and accountability.

The research sits at the intersection of Computer Science, Software Engineering, Human-AI interaction, socio-technical systems, and human-centered design. It uses an iterative, mixed-methods approach and is connected to community-engaged software projects through the INSPIRE: STEM for Social Impact program. Successful candidates will work in a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment and contribute to research with both scientific and societal impact.

PhD position: Applicants should have an MSc in Software Engineering with a focus on human factors, a strong empirical research background, experience in human-AI interaction or software teams, excellent English communication skills, and interest in technology in society and community-based research. Desired experience includes collaborative software development, publication in top venues such as ICSE, FSE, TOSEM, EMSE, CHI, or CSCW, familiarity with AI-assisted development tools, and interest in responsible AI, participatory design, and computing education.

Postdoctoral fellowship: Applicants should have a PhD in Software Engineering with a focus on human factors, a strong empirical research record, and experience in human-AI interaction, socio-technical systems, or software teams. Desired qualifications are similar to the PhD role, with added opportunities to contribute to grant writing, research dissemination, educational materials, and possibly teaching or guest lecturing.

How to apply: Email [email protected] with the correct subject line for the PhD or postdoc application. Include a CV, cover letter, up to 3 representative publications, and reference contact information. The post does not specify a deadline, and the start date for the fellowship is September 1, 2026 with some flexibility.
