PhD and Postdoctoral Positions in AI for Sustainable Architectural Design Practice Aalborg University in Denmark

Aalborg University is advertising one PhD position and one postdoctoral researcher position in AI for sustainable architectural design practice, based in the Department of Computer Science in Aalborg, Denmark, with close collaboration with the Department of Architecture, Design, and Media Technology.

The project sits at the intersection of human-computer interaction, generative AI, architectural design, and sustainable building design. The research asks how AI decision support and simulation-assisted feedback can help architects during early design ideation, and whether AI can support creativity while improving energy efficiency and occupant health. The PhD will focus on understanding creative professionals’ needs, requirements gathering, interactive system development, and empirical evaluation in real-world settings. The postdoc will develop and evaluate interactive generative AI prototypes and creativity-support tools for architectural practice.

Both positions are part of the Human-Augmentation and Collaboration research group within the Human-Centered Computing Section. The team emphasizes interdisciplinary work, strong ties to architectural practice, and publication in leading HCI venues. The positions are three-year, fully funded roles, with a start date of 1 August 2026 or soon thereafter.

Eligibility highlights: PhD applicants should hold a master’s degree in HCI, computer science, interaction design, applied AI, architectural design, or a related field. Postdoc applicants should hold a PhD in a related field. Strong English communication skills are essential, and prior architecture expertise is not required. For the postdoc, if the PhD is not yet completed, proof of upcoming graduation may be accepted.
