About this position

The University of Padova, one of Europe’s oldest and most prestigious universities, is offering PhD and postdoctoral positions in deep earthquake research as part of the ERC Consolidator Grant SODA. Hosted by the Department of Geosciences, this project focuses on investigating deep earthquakes using advanced seismological approaches and thermomechanical modelling. The research sits at the intersection of geophysics, computational science, and earthquake physics, providing a unique opportunity for candidates to contribute to cutting-edge studies in Earth science.

Currently, applications are especially encouraged for two postdoctoral roles: one in thermomechanical modelling and another in global seismological data analysis. The thermomechanical modelling position requires a strong background in numerical or analytical modelling of processes relevant to lithospheric and mantle dynamics. The global seismological data analysis position seeks candidates with expertise in large-scale seismic data processing, ideally with experience in machine learning, advanced computational methods, GPU acceleration, and tensor-based techniques. Highly motivated PhD candidates with relevant backgrounds are also invited to apply.

The Department of Geosciences at Padova offers a vibrant, dynamic, and collaborative research environment, bringing together an international community of scientists working across seismology, geophysics, geodynamics, geology, and environmental sciences. The department is committed to interdisciplinary research and provides access to excellent computational facilities, state-of-the-art laboratories, and a lively schedule of seminars, workshops, and group activities. Padova itself is a thriving university city with a high quality of life and a welcoming atmosphere for students and researchers from around the world.

Positions are funded through the ERC Consolidator Grant SODA (Horizon 2020), with flexible starting dates and the possibility to begin as early as September 2026. Additional positions may be opened as the project progresses, and earlier start dates may be considered for outstanding candidates. The application deadline is December 8, 2026, but applications will be considered on a rolling basis until filled.

Applicants for postdoctoral positions should hold a PhD or equivalent in geosciences or a related field, with 1–4 years of research experience. Strong skills in numerical or analytical modelling, or expertise in seismic data analysis, are required. Experience with machine learning, computational methods, GPU acceleration, and tensor-based techniques is desirable. Excellent English language skills are essential. PhD candidates should be highly motivated and have a relevant academic background in geosciences, physics, or computational science.

To apply, interested candidates should contact Dr. Piero Poli directly via email at [email protected], including details of their academic background and research experience. For more information, visit the supervisor’s academic page or the department website. This is an outstanding opportunity to advance your career and engage in innovative research at the frontier of Earth science.
